For more than two decades, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians has been best known in Southwest Michigan for building Four Winds Casinos into one of the region’s largest employers and economic engines. But behind the scenes, the Band has quietly been assembling a diversified portfolio of businesses designed to generate long-term wealth well beyond the gaming industry.
That strategy reached another significant milestone Thursday as Mno-Bmadsen, the Pokagon Band’s non-gaming investment enterprise, announced it has completed its planned acquisition of the remaining ownership interest in Mno-DREK, giving the company full ownership of a manufacturing group that includes three precision tooling and industrial businesses in Michigan and Indiana.
The move marks the culmination of an eight-year succession plan that began in 2018, when Mno-Bmadsen partnered with DREK Holdings to establish Mno-DREK with the goal of acquiring, growing and eventually fully owning a portfolio of manufacturing companies.
“This acquisition marks the successful completion of a strategic investment plan that began in 2018,” said Julio Martinez, CEO of Mno-Bmadsen. “We have been preparing for this transition and look forward to announcing new company leadership and future expansion plans in the coming months.”
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition gives Mno-Bmadsen 100 percent ownership of:
While Four Winds Casinos remain the financial foundation of the Pokagon Band’s business operations, Thursday’s announcement illustrates how the Band has steadily transformed gaming revenue into investments across multiple industries.
Created in 2012, Mno-Bmadsen was established specifically to diversify the Tribe’s business interests and reduce long-term reliance on casino revenue. Today, the organization manages investments spanning manufacturing, construction, professional services, commercial real estate, retail businesses and passive investment holdings.
Its holdings also include mixed-use commercial properties and hospitality investments, reflecting a strategy of creating multiple, independent revenue streams.
For tribal governments across the country, diversification has become an increasingly important goal as casino markets mature and competition expands. Rather than depending solely on gaming, many tribes are using casino profits to acquire businesses that can generate stable income regardless of fluctuations in the gaming industry.
For the Pokagon Band, that strategy also creates opportunities that extend beyond Southwest Michigan while bringing profits back to benefit Pokagon citizens.
Mno-Bmadsen Board Chair Linda Cook said the completed acquisition represents exactly what the organization was created to accomplish.
“We entered this partnership with a long-term vision, worked alongside experienced industry leaders, and have now reached the point where Mno-Bmadsen is prepared to steward this portfolio on behalf of the Pokagon Band,” Cook said. “We are excited about the opportunities ahead and the lasting value this investment will continue to create for future generations of Pokagon Citizens.”
Rather than building manufacturing operations from scratch, Mno-Bmadsen has pursued a “buy, hold and grow” strategy by acquiring established companies with experienced workforces and customer relationships, then investing in their continued growth.
The company said DREK Holdings provided executive leadership and operational guidance throughout the partnership while preparing Mno-Bmadsen to assume complete ownership.
Although the newly acquired companies operate outside the immediate Southwest Michigan market, the transaction reflects the continued growth of one of the region’s most influential business organizations.
The Pokagon Band today supports thousands of jobs through Four Winds Casinos, hospitality operations, government services and its expanding portfolio of non-gaming businesses. Over the past two decades, the Band has evolved into one of the largest economic drivers in Southwest Michigan, with investments reaching well beyond the gaming floor.
Mno-Bmadsen officials said the company will continue investing in its manufacturing portfolio while pursuing additional opportunities aligned with the Pokagon Band’s long-term economic development strategy. The organization said announcements regarding new leadership and future expansion initiatives are expected in the coming months.
